Saudi Arabia in context

ISO 42001 next to Saudi AI and data rules

ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard for an AI management system. It is not Saudi law. It gives organizations in Saudi Arabia a structure for AI governance that sits alongside requirements from SDAIA, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority.

SDAIA AI Ethics Principles

SDAIA published version 2.0 of its AI Ethics Principles in 2023. It sets seven principles, from fairness and privacy to accountability, and ties the requirements to the risk level of an AI system.

Personal Data Protection Law

The PDPL came into force on 14 September 2023 with a one-year grace period. It has been fully enforceable since 14 September 2024, and SDAIA is the regulator.

Where ISO/IEC 42001 fits

An AI management system covers roles, risk assessment, policies, monitoring and audit. Lead Implementers build it and Lead Auditors check it. Mapping that system to SDAIA and PDPL requirements is separate work for your legal and compliance team.

Know the limits

A PECB credential shows a person's competence. An ISO/IEC 42001 certificate shows that an organization runs an AI management system that meets the standard. Neither makes an organization compliant with Saudi law or the EU AI Act.

ISO/IEC 42001 is not a harmonised standard under the EU AI Act. Ask a qualified legal adviser which obligations apply to you.

Sources, checked 22 October 2026 SDAIA's own publications are the primary source for Saudi requirements. Read them before you rely on this summary.

Why reconn

Same PECB credential, with a trainer behind you

PECB sets, administers and grades every exam, so the credential is the same wherever you buy the course. What differs is the support around it.

PECB became the first certification body to receive UKAS accreditation under ISO/IEC 17024:2012 for its ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer personnel certification schemes (18 August 2026). Accreditation applies to the certification schemes. It does not make an organization compliant with ISO/IEC 42001 or the EU AI Act.

Before you buy: how to avoid look-alike "PECB" programs

Some sellers use PECB's name without PECB's authorization. Check these six things before you pay anyone.

  1. PECB authorization. Ask the seller to show their PECB authorization in writing. You can confirm it with support@pecb.com.
  2. The exact credential name. It should read "PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer" (or the program you chose), issued by PECB.
  3. Where you study and sit the exam. You study in MyPECB and take the exam on the PECB Exams app.
  4. What the price includes. Exam attempts, the certification application and the first-year annual membership fee, and over what window.
  5. Who supports you. A named trainer you can reach, and for how long.
  6. Red flags. A "guaranteed pass" or pressure to switch to an "equivalent" program.

The reconn difference

A PECB Certified Trainer behind you.

The same official PECB certification, a free 1-on-1 session with a PECB Certified Trainer, and unlimited email and WhatsApp support until you pass, within 12 months of enrollment.

The standard

ISO/IEC 42001:2023

Published by ISO in December 2023, it sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AI management system. It applies to organisations of any size that develop, provide or use AI-based products or services.

It is a certifiable standard, which is why the Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor credentials matter: they show you can run, or audit, the system the standard describes.

How your trainer supports you on this course

The course content is PECB's official courseware, so the curriculum and exam are identical whoever you buy from. Shenoy's part is the support around it:

  • A free 60-minute 1-on-1 session

Adapted to your background. From tech, you go deeper on tools, terminology and how AI systems work. From governance, risk or compliance, he keeps it in plain language and focuses on how to run the implementation project.

  • Direct email and WhatsApp support

From your trainer until you clear your exam, within your 12-month enrollment window.

  • Practical context

Drawn from hands-on AI governance, security and ISO implementation work, so the standard makes sense outside the slides.

Questions

Questions before you enrol

Can I take PECB ISO 42001 certification online from Saudi Arabia?

Which ISO 42001 program should I start with?

Start with the Lead Auditor if you will audit AI management systems, the Lead Implementer if you will build and run one, and the Foundation if you are new to the standard. The bundle covers both Lead programs and costs less than buying both courses separately. Prices differ by region, so check the live price on each page.

Neither proves compliance with Saudi law. The Personal Data Protection Law and SDAIA's AI Ethics Principles have their own requirements, so check them with a qualified legal adviser.

Is PECB's ISO 42001 certification accredited by UKAS?
